History

In all seasons, the All-American Bowl recognizes and honors high school athletes and academic achievers who have excelled both on and off the field. Twenty years ago, the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, hosted the National Championship Game, a High School Football game featuring the best 100 seniors nationwide. The All-American Bowl, broadcast yearly on NBC, is the country’s most watched and attended high school sporting event.

On December 30, 2000, at Highlander Stadium in Dallas, Texas, the first-ever national HS Football all-star game got underway. The game was created and owned by All American Games, founded and led by Douglas Berman. The next year, the tournament moved to San Antonio, and ever since 2003, it has been held at the Alamodome. Beginning in 2019, the All-American Bowl was owned and operated by NBC Sports, having previously owned by All-American Games.

Game Rules

  • Normal play consists of two 11-man teams (one attacking, one defending) squaring off over the course of four 15-minute halves.
  • Each team gets three ‘time-outs’ every half, and a 12-minute break separates each half.
  • The goal of football is to advance the ball toward the other team’s “end zone” by either running with it until being tackled or passing it to a teammate further down the field who will run with it.
  • A team consists of 45 players, only 11 of whom can be on the field at any moment. Each team’s quarterback is the most important player because he tries to control the game’s tempo.

Scoring

The scoring system in this game is pretty similar to other games.

  • 6 points are scored when a team crosses the opposition’s goal line with the ball. This is called “Touchdown”.
  • 3 points will be scored when a kicker is close enough to the end zone to kick the ball through the posts.
  • A team will earn an extra point if they kick the ball to the upright post after a touchdown. It’s Similar to Rugby.
  • Extra two points can be earned by kicking the ball to the end zone again.
  • The defensive team can earn two points if they can tackle a member of the opposite team in their Zone.
